To diagnose water-based ink problems on PP non-woven fabric, separate four questions: did the ink wet the surface, transfer at the intended film weight, lose water through the dryer, and develop the required final resistance? A print that feels dry can still block, rub off, or fail adhesion after stacking.

Do Not Treat Drying and Adhesion as the Same Failure

Slow drying leaves water or co-solvent in the ink film. Poor adhesion means the dried film does not remain attached under the agreed test. Blocking means printed surfaces stick under pressure, temperature, or storage time. Weak rub resistance may come from incomplete film formation, unsuitable ink, contamination, or an aggressive test. One symptom can have several causes, so changing ink viscosity alone is rarely a controlled diagnosis.

Preserve a Complete Fault Sample

Record the fabric Supplier and lot, PP construction, GSM, treated side, time since treatment if known, ink system and batch, additions, pH, viscosity method, temperature, anilox identity, plate, impression, dryer settings, line speed, room conditions, rewind or stack pressure, and time to test.

Keep samples from the first good production, the fault period, and after correction. Label their machine direction and deck. An unlabeled printed swatch cannot reconstruct the press condition.

Use the Symptom to Choose the First Test

Check the Fabric Surface Before Reformulating Ink

PP has low surface energy, and surface treatment can decay or become ineffective through storage, contamination, or contact with the untreated side. Confirm roll orientation and test several positions across the web and through the roll.

ISO 8296:2003 specifies a wetting-tension method for plastic film and sheeting. The standard also warns that wetting tension alone is not a complete measure of ink adhesion. For spunbond nonwoven, the buyer, fabric Supplier, ink Supplier, and test laboratory should agree whether that method or another validated procedure is suitable for the irregular surface.

• Use fresh, controlled test materials and follow their safety instructions.
• Test the actual printable side.
• Keep oil, hand cream, dust, and cleaning residue away from specimens.
• Link results to roll and position rather than reporting one value for the shipment.

Stabilize the Working Ink Before Adjusting the Press

Water-based ink changes as water and volatile components evaporate. Measure viscosity with one defined instrument, temperature, method, and timing. Record pH only where the ink Supplier specifies it as a control. Use approved additions in measured amounts and allow circulation before judging the result.

Do not use a universal pH or viscosity copied from another ink. Pigment, resin, color strength, defoamer, reducer, and application differ. Ask the ink Manufacturer for the working range and addition sequence for the exact product and substrate.

Control Ink Transfer Before Adding More Drying Energy

An excessive ink film is harder to dry and may close fine texture. Inspect anilox LPI, volume, wear, plugging, doctoring, plate condition, impression, and actual artwork coverage. The right transfer system for a solid area may overload fine text.

Evaluate color and drying together. Reducing film weight may solve blocking but fail the approved color target if the anilox and ink strength are not matched.

Balance Airflow, Temperature, Exhaust, and Dwell Time

Drying requires energy and removal of moisture-laden air. A high temperature display does not prove useful airflow at the web. Inspect nozzles, filters, fans, heaters, exhaust, recirculation, web distance, and blocked ducts. Measure conditions through the web width where practical.

The Flexographic Technical Association notes that water-based systems present distinct wetting and drying considerations and that enhanced high-velocity air can improve drying. Apply that principle within the limits of the ink, PP nonwoven, machine, workplace ventilation, and local safety requirements. Excess heat can deform material, change tension, or create an unsafe condition.

Test the Downstream Condition, Not Only the Press Exit

Define when and how adhesion, rub, blocking, color, and odor are evaluated. Record sample age, pressure, temperature, contact surface, number of rubs or cycles, and pass criterion. A print may leave the dryer dry to touch yet develop resistance later; another may block because it is stacked hot under pressure.

1. Approve the substrate and ink combination at controlled settings.
2. Run a step trial changing one variable at a time.
3. Collect samples at the press exit and after the agreed conditioning time.
4. Test with the customer-approved method.
5. Save the accepted recipe and physical reference.

Send a Reproducible Fault Brief

Send Zhengxin the printing-machine model, anilox codes, speed, dryer arrangement, fabric and ink data, working-ink records, photos, and test method. We can review the machine-side variables with the ink and material Suppliers. A Customizable correction should be validated on the real product before becoming an OEM or ODM production setting.
